Al Capone was born January 17, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York. Capone suffered a tough childhood, being involved in not just one, but two "kid gangs". Although Capone was intelligent, he dropped out of school in 6th grade at age 14. Then, he worked various jobs. These jobs included being a clerk at a candy store, a pin boy at the bowling alley, and a cutter at a book bindery. He also worked in his gang leader's hotel inn as a bartender and bouncer. In 1918, Capone met an Irish woman named Mae Coughlin. They had one son, Albert Farncis, and married in the same year. Capone slowly rose to be a violent gangster and worked his way to the top of the chain. Many gangs attempted to take his life, but they all failed. Rivalry with the North-Side grew, and this led to the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.
